I'm back! Tired and a little grubby, but totally enchanted with that dirty, noisy, but utterly captivating jewel in India's crown. The Golden Triangle.

It took no time at all for my expectations to be shattered.

My driver was duly waiting for me at five in the morning at Delhi International Airport. There's something comforting about seeing your name on a little board as you as you march into the unknown, weary from a long fight and apprehensive about what awaits you.

As he marched me from the terminal we were met by a crowd of beggars, hands outstretched, some holding tiny babies, some not much older than babies themselves. My driver tells me, in perfect English, that many if not most of these people are professional beggars who can earn a better living here than if they were to get a job. He warns me that I will encounter them at all the sights I visit and to be very selective when handing out money.

He piled me and my bag into his white Morris Oxford - or Ambassador as they are called here - donned his chauffer's cap and off we sped into the thick fog and chaotic traffic of a Delhi morning.

We charged down a wide dual carriageway weaving from lane to lane , his hand furiously pressing the horn, as he skilfully avoided cyclists, lorries, carts and auto rickshaws - tuc tucs as they're known in other parts of the world.

Every now and again we meet a lorry or car coming towards us on the wrong carriageway. Anything goes here it seems! As we get closer to the centre of Delhi, my man joins in the free for all - jumping red lights and going the wrong way around roundabouts! But somehow, as I am to discover during my journeys, it works!

Against all odds we arrive at the Hotel Ajanta. As predicted this is a really down market area on the Aracasham Road known for its hundreds of budget hotels. The narrow street is covered in rubbish and even at this early hour food is being cooked, street barbers are shaving their customers and stalls of bananas and grapes are doing brisk business.

To my surprise there's is a uniformed commissionaire to see me inside and I find myself in a really smart reception area with a sea of smiling faces to greet me. I am invited into the Managers office where I join him in a cup of sweet tea whilst completing the formalities. Once in my room I'm very pleasantly surprised. It's clean, neat. The bed linen is crisp and white, as are the towels. A very efficient air conditioner hums on the wall and a fan whirs above my head. It seems to bear no resemblance at all to the hotel described in several of the reviews I read before I left. I fling back the heavy curtains to reveal - a wall! There's no window! Never mind.

After a few hours of very deep sleep I venture down stairs. A notice above the lift warns you 'Do not take lift in case of fire'. I think it actually means 'In the event of fire do not take lift'! I walk out into the street narrowly avoiding being mown down by a cycle-rickshaw and I hear a voice behind me. 'Mr Keith - Mr Keith'. I look round to find the Manager calling me back. 'You are having a complimentary tour of the city' he tells me, and he clicks his fingers at a uniformed driver who takes me to his air-conditioned car and off we go!

Just getting out of the street and onto the main drag is a challenge. There are no pavements and the various vehicles struggle around each other whilst avoiding people, dogs, cows, monkeys and peacocks! The main road by now is packed with every type of wheeled vehicle imaginable. Infact cars are in the minority. Battered and rusting buses proclaim on their sides 'The worlds largest eco-friendly bus fleet' whilst belching smoke into your face. My ears are assaulted by horns, shouting voices and police whistles but somehow we keep moving only inches away from whatever is ahead, behind or beside us. Then we drive onto the enormously wide Rajpath, a straight road with Rashrapati Bhaven - the president's mosque like house at one end and India Gate the other. This fabulous 42 metre high arch bears the names of 90,000 Indians killed in WW1,the Northwest frontier and the 1919 Afghan fiasco ( I'm not really a smart-arse, I copied that bit from my Lonely Planet!) We went to Humayyuns Tomb which in a most beautiful garden with a small red stone version of the Taj Mahal at one end. It is immediately apparent that these historical sites are in complete contrast to the world outside. The dropping of litter is prohibited as is - and I quote- 'smoking, eating, bathing, urinating, washing of clothes and other anti-social behaviour'.

Jama Masjid is an enormous and striking mosque. Its forecourt can accommodate 2500 kneeling devotees. It's the largest in the whole of India and is an architectural extravaganza in red sandstone and glistening white marble.

Just outside we walk a street where cotton products are traded. The colors are vivid and all around you. Saris cushion covers, throws and massive rolls of fabric. Then suddenly the trade changes, and in every direction men are weaving spokes into wheels whilst others are assembling cycle frames with iron mallets. There are towers of bicycle tires and displays of new and second hand rickshaws. And everywhere you look there are food vendors working away over little fires and others selling fruit.

Most moving however is Ghandi's monument on the site of the place he was cremated following his assassination. It's small in size but huge in its impact as was the man himself. A simple block of grey marble no bigger than a table topped with a modest eternal flame. The whole is surrounded by flower beds and stripy lawns, and gentle music plays from concealed speakers. Around it a raised circular walkway with benches where one can sit and soak up the tranquillity. A constant stream of devotees come and goes. Families sit on the ground enjoying themselves and parties of school children march in an orderly fashion, only stopping to one by one shake my hand and introduce themselves. This utterly beautiful sight sits in the middle of Raj Ghat - an enormous area of manicured grassy mounds, flower borders and exotic trees. Such is the peace and quiet that one is suddenly oblivious to the constant distant roar of the traffic all around the park.

We drive here and there - one sight after another and almost too much to take in by a jet-lagged traveler!

Back at the hotel I visit their travel office when I am sold on the merits of taking a guided tour of the Golden Triangle rather than attempting to do it alone and by train. The argument is so persuasive that I give in and blow my budget out of the water. But this is a once in a lifetime experience and I don't want to miss a thing. So I'll never know if my pre-conceived image of Indian rail travel is correct - I'm doing the 500 mile round trip by car!

It's 7am the next day and my driver Shyam awaits me and off we go to Agra.

Shyam Rathore is a young single man of 26 who's fairly new to this game and keen to impress. And impress he does over next few days. We get on so well that he decides that I am now his second father! And it seems my son and daughters are his brother and sisters. Better tell them they have a new step brother!

Travel is mostly on motorways - National Routes as they are called. One minute as smooth as a baby's bum and the next as broken up and bumpy as a cart track. Again cars are outnumbered by all the aforementioned forms of transport plus carts loaded high with goodness- knows- what and towed at a snail's pace by weary looking camels. And of course pedestrians wander all over the road. Again, no lane discipline, or carriageway discipline come to that. These are toll roads with occasional compulsory 10 minute stops where sellers look out for foreign faces in the hope of flogging you something or persuading you to have your picture taken with a monkey.

On route we stop at a lovely restaurant where during my meal I am entertained by a father and son puppet show. I understand this is something of a tradition in Rajasthan.

I'm here. The highlight of my tour and my main reason for the journey. The Taj Mahal. What can I say? Where do I begin?

Breathtaking is a word too often used lightly, but seeing this for the first time as you walk around a corner simply makes you gasp. There, framed in the gateway is this enormous glistening white .....thing! This truly spectacular Mughal mausoleum. It's huge! And the closer you get the more fabulous it looks. It was built as a token of love by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his second wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth. It was started in 1631 and not completed until 1653. When one considers that no machinery was available to the craftsmen, it's no surprise it took so long. The marble walls are decorated with patterns of inset rare and valuable stones. Precision that even today's computerised tools would struggle to emulate. But it's the sheer amount of decoration, and the skill with which the builders managed to hide the joins in the blocks of marble that leaves one in total awe. So, I've been there, I've touched it, and oh yes - I did get to sit on the 'VIP Bench' where leaders the world over have been photographed, as well as our own Princess Diana!

My next stop is the famous Red Fort. To follow the Taj Mahal is a pretty tough call for any tourist sight, but this is, after all, the largest fortress in all India and it doesn't disappoint. It contains some of the finest architectural features you are ever likely to see. But once again the Taj Mahal just has to upstage it, because the Red Fort offers you the most incredible view of the old marble lady you are ever going to find.

And then, oh dear, we arrive at the Hotel Mayer. Initial impression favourable. A collection of bungalows strung around a lawn. But once inside the horror story begins! It's simply worn out! The electrics look decidedly dodgy and when I turn on the fan it takes on a life of its own and wobbles in the most alarming fashion. The floor is dirty, the walls are dirty and the bathroom is simply unusable. I throw out several slugs which had taken up residence. My complaints fall on deaf ears, but as I'm only staying one night I'll suffer it. What I not expecting are the hundreds of mosquitoes that suddenly appear when I turn out the light and decide to feast on me!

One word of warning to anyone planning this trip. Hotel Mayer. Avoid.

A whole day's drive ahead as we join the single track 180 mile road to the Pink City - Jaipur. To ease the boredom Shyam and I relate amusing tales. Neither of us understands what the other is on about but we laugh Oh how we laugh!

We stop at Fatehpur Sikri - a fortified ghost town built between 1570 and 1586 (it says here) It is truly beautiful and in excellent order. Its deep red walls and intricate carvings are quite magical. Not so good are the guides who simply won't leave you alone.

On we go and we drive through small townships bustling with activity as everyone goes about the daily task. Making, mending, selling and cooking whilst their small children and babies play in the dust. We see the privileged few, the children whose parents can afford to send them to school. There's no state school system to speak of, so only a minority receive an education. They are easy to spot in their immaculate and brightly coloured uniforms. A complete contrast to the dirt and grime which they pick their way through. Some walk to school, and some use the yellow buses - dilapidated versions of those seen in America. Not only do they sit inside but also on the roof! The other favoured school transport is a large wooden box on wheels where 20 or 30 of them are crammed in and pulled along by an ancient tractor.

We drive past playgrounds - one a sea of blue, another awash with pink.

At various points along the way we are warned of 'Men at Work' There we find groups of brightly dressed ladies toiling away, surrounded by their children, whilst their men folk sit playing cards or reading papers. Equality seems a long way off!
Equality in dress in India has also fallen by the wayside. Nowadays men have adopted a Western style of attire whilst the womenfolk still take great pride in their shimmering, almost luminous saris and elaborate henna hand and arm decorations. Even amongst teenage girls, jeans and tee shirts are very rarely worn.

So, here we are in Jaipur, Shyams home town, and I book into the Hotel Dera Rawatser. Shyam invites me to visit his parents and brothers, but unfortunately it's not possible due to family commitments.

Note to anyone planning this trip. Get yourself into the Hotel Dera Rawatser!

It's truly fabulous. Not in an expensive extravagant way. It is still, after all, a budget hotel. This is a family hotel in a typical Rajasthan residence. My room is beautifully decked out with fabulous highly decorated furniture, and the biggest bed I've ever seen. The fabrics are simply exotic and the décor plain yet sophisticated. Have I ever fallen on my feet here! Outside are small courtyards and little grassy areas where you can eat, drink (Kingfisher of course) or just unwind.
Jaipur is called the pink city because it is .....pink! It was painted pink in 1876 to celebrate the visit to the city by the then Prince of Wales. By the look of it however, it doesn't seem to have been touched since. It was India's first planned city.

My first stop sounds dull. An ancient observatory called Jantar Mantar meaning 'instrument of calculation' (thanks again Lonely Planet!) But dull it's not. At first you seem to be entering an exhibition of modern sculptures. But they aren't modern. They were built in 1728. And they are not sculptures; rather they are ingenious instruments which, by the use of shad
ow, tell you the time and the positions of the stars. Some are astronomical and others astrological. Even today these devises are used by business people and engaged couples to calculate the best moment to do a deal or plan a wedding.

Amid the total chaos of the city is Hawa Mahal, a residence to house the royal harem. It rises floor upon floor, high above the crowded street below.

But the high point of any visit to Jaipur (quite literally) has to be the incredible Amber Fort which perches high on a mountain top overlooking the city below. It's like something from a child story book. Started in 1592 it's an awe-inspiring explosion of pink sandstone and

white marble.

After another night at the Hotel, where Shyam joins me for supper, it's
time to hit the road and head back to Delhi. Once back at the Hotel Ajanta it's time to bid farewell to my trusty guide and I promise to keep in touch. So, I have a couple of days to relax after my frantic tour.

In the centre of Delhi I visit Connaught Place - a circle of up market shops around a delightful round park where I relax with my book. I visit - and I would recommend it to anybody - the underground market known as the Paliker Bazaar. It's a rabbit warren of small shops selling everything from cheap jewellery to men's suits at £15 a go.
Getting around is easy and cheap. I use the auto rickshaws. Some haggling is required at the start of each journey and I must say that my initial euphoria at beating down my driver from Rp50/- to Rp20/- turns to guilt when I remind myself that I've just reduced my fare from 55p to 23p.

Everywhere I go people want to talk. Young people especially seize this opportunity to improve their English. One 19 year old proudly demonstrated his recently acquired skills in Cockney rhyming slang! Eventually however, conversation always turns to cricket - a subject on which I have very little knowledge. But I get by.

Some people however have another reason to get into conversation. They steer you towards the tourist shops and once you are safely inside they pick up a coupon which presumably has some kind of financial value attached to it.

So what have I learned? There are far fewer beggars than I expected and the poverty seems less apparent, or possibly more hidden. I learned that curry is not the hot fiery dish we enjoy in the West, and it's mainly vegetarian. It's a widely held belief that Chicken Tikka Massala is not available in India. Wrong. I saw on at least three menus listed alongside burgers and sandwiches in the Continental food selection. And I've learned to be happy with my lot. When I see the smiling faces of people who have nothing more than a tent to live in and very little to eat I realise how lucky I am.
